ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) -- Three Kurdish rebels and one government-paid village guard were killed in two clashes in southeast Turkey, according to authorities and news reports Friday.

Turkish troops killed two Kurdish rebels near the southeastern city of Sirnak late Thursday, the military said.

One rebel and one village guard were killed in a clash near the border with Iran Friday, the state-run Anatolia news agency said. Three other village guards were also wounded, it added.

Kurdish rebels have been fighting for self-rule in Turkey's Kurdish majority areas since 1984. The fighting has claimed tens of thousands of lives.

Village guards in the region are armed militias who use their local knowledge to help Turkey's military in anti-rebel operations.

Turkey, like the U.S. and the EU, considers the rebels terrorists.
