Postal Carrier Catches Falling Baby

(CBS/AP) A postal worker is credited with saving a 1-year-old girl's life by catching her after she fell out of a second-story window in Albany, N.Y.

Lisa Harrell was delivering mail to a home late Monday morning when she noticed a baby in a window above the front door. Harrell says the next thing she knew, the baby had fallen into her arms.

"I started crying," Harrell told CBS News affiliate WRGB-TV, "I just said, 'Thank God I caught this baby.'"

WRGB correspondent Michelle Marsh reports that it was a lucky coincidence that Harrell was even on the doorstep that morning.

"I was delivering an express piece of mail, I had to deviate from my route," Harrell said. After ringing the door bell a few times, Harrell said she saw a baby in the window.

"Next thing you know the baby fell out the window, fell on me and I caught the baby," Harrell said, adding that the child had "not a scratch on her."

When the baby's mother, Brenda Morales, realized what happened, she ran outside and grabbed the girl from Harrell. The woman thanked Harrell and then ran down the street to her mother's house.

Paramedics checked the baby at the scene but found no injuries.

No charges are being filed against the mother, who says she had placed her daughter on a bed that was up against the window. The mother says her back was turned when her daughter crawled out the open window.

Daniel Coleman, a Battalion Chief at the Albany Fire Department, had two pieces of advice for parents: "First off, keep an eye on your children. The second thing is, if your windows have screens to make sure the screens are intact and operational."

"No, I don't feel like a hero," Harrell told WRGB. "I've been delivering for 14 years - first experience for anything like this. Hopefully [it's] my last one."
