ANKARA, Turkey - A clash between Turkish troops and Kurdish rebels near Turkey's southeastern border with Iraq left a Turkish soldier dead, the military said Thursday.
Seven soldiers were also injured in the fighting late Wednesday in the Bestler Dereler area in Sirnak province, the military said in a statement on its Web site. Two of the soldiers were in serious condition, it said.
Also Wednesday, Turkish warplanes hit a group of Kurdish rebels reportedly trying to infiltrate Turkey from the Avasin-Basyan region of northern Iraq.
Rebels from the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, have been fighting for Kurdish self-rule in Turkey's southeast since 1984. The group launches attacks against targets in Turkey from its bases in northern Iraq. The fighting has claimed tens of thousands of lives.
