NEW YORK (AP) -- Wall Street has turned in a narrowly mixed performance following a choppy session. Investors are clearly uneasy about buying stocks in an uncertain economy.
Reports of higher unemployment claims and weak readings on the national and Philadelphia-area economies reinforced the market's recession worries. Investors also contended with an unexpectedly large loss from Merrill Lynch & Co. and disappointing results from mobile phone maker Nokia Corp. and Harley-Davidson Inc.
A strong quarterly report from IBM Corp. countered the bad news.
The Dow Jones industrials are up about a point at the 12,620 level.
