NYC Inspector Charged with Lying about Crane that Collapsed

NEW YORK (AP) _ A New York City inspector is charged with lying about checking the construction crane that fell on a building last week and left seven people dead.

Officials say Edward Marquette did not inspect the crane, despite a complaint that was filed about it on March 4th. The collapse followed weeks of complaints by people in the neighborhood who said the crane didn't look safe.

Still, officials says it's unlikely an inspection would have prevented Saturday's collapse because the parts of the crane that failed weren't on site when the complaint was logged.

Marquette was arrested yesterday and now faces charges of falsifying business records. He's been released without bail and suspended from his post.

Officials have also ordered a full audit of Marquette's inspection
reports over the past six months.
