Westar Receives Award For Wetland Program

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (WIBW)-- Topeka based Westar energy received the 87th annual Edison award presented by the Edison Electric Institute Monday in Las Vegas.

Westar energy received the 2014 award for building a full-scale wetland to treat their waste water.

The President of Edison Electric Institute, Tom Kuhn said that Westar's wetland system "demonstrated distinguished leadership and outstanding innovation." Part of the improvements led to a 97 % reduction in their Sulfur Dioxide emissions.

The wetland is expected to save Westar 40 million dollars over 15 years in capital and operational costs that will in return benefit their customers.
