TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- The Antioch Family Life Center received a generous donation Thursday.
Westar Energy Foundation President Cynthia McCarvel presented the organization with a $5,000 check.
The money will help support the Freedom Schools Program, which provides summer and after school reading programs to children through eighth grade.
The program works to build self esteem and an interest in learning by integrating reading, math and social action into the curriculum.
"If they can maintain their grade level, they'll also have a higher chance of graduating from high school, and graduating from high school means better employment, a college education, better workforce skills," said Glenda DuBoise, Executive Director of Antioch Family Life Center.
Since the Westar Energy Foundation began in 1990, its given more than $13 million to civic and charitable organizations.
