TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) Debate over the proper level of funding for Kansas public schools will shift in 2014 from the courthouse to the Statehouse after justices issue a ruling on the latest school finance lawsuit.

That sets up a discussion over how legislators react.

The Kansas Supreme Court has given no indication how quickly it would rule on the case, though an opinion is expected near the Jan. 13 start of the 2014 session. A lower court has ruled that the state is not meeting its constitutional obligations for funding schools, ordering an increase in spending of more than $440 million.

Kansas will spend more than $3 billion in the current fiscal year, and Republican leaders show no indication they will increase that amount.
