TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)- Washburn is remembering victims of 9/11 and is getting help from United Way.

As part of United Way's Nancy Perry Day of Caring workers from the City of Topeka, Jostens, and Payless Shoes are aiding the Washburn Americorps VISTA program.

September 9th is their 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance food and clothing drive. Posted fliers asked citizens to place food and clothing on their doorstep on the morning of Friday, September 9th. Volunteers then picked up the donations and brought them to the Washburn Alumni Center.

The Americorps VISTA director says the purpose of the 9/11 drive is for citizens to honor the lives lost 10 years ago by helping their community today.

"People gave their lives to help their community. Though we may not give our lives, we can certainly give back to people in need,” said Judy Nickelson.

Donations go to Let's Help and Doorstep.
