DICKINSON COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka man was injured when he collided head on with a semi on I-70 West in Dickinson County.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident happened about 10:30 p.m. Sunday night, seven miles east of Abilene.
They say that 46-year-old Alonzo Lax was Eastbound in a construction area in the Westbound lanes of I-70 when he collided with the tractor trailer. Reports do not indicate what may have caused Lax to cross over into oncoming traffic.
Lax was taken to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.The severity of his injuries are not known but KHP's crash log lists him as "disabled." Officials say he is in critical condition.
The KHP report indicates that the semi driver, 49-year old Bruce Uhlenkamp of Central City Iowa, was "possibly injured" in the crash. Both men were wearing their seat belts.
I-70 Westbound near the accident was still closed Monday afternoon.
Crews were spotted cleaning up a diesel leak on the interstate Monday morning and hours later, troopers said crews were working to replace a stretch of damaged guardrail. Traffic is being re-routed. Officials could not provide a timeline of when the section of westbound lanes would reopen.
