TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Fire officials told 13 News that crews saw flames coming out of the basement at 646 N.E. Chester when they arrived around 12:30 Tuesday morning.
Battalion Chief Martin Gray said the homes smoke alarms alerted the family members and they all got out without injury. He said fire crews contained the fire to the basement before it spread to the rest of the house. Firefighters reported the fire out around 1:10 a.m.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Shawnee County Dispatch said a total of nine units assisted with the fire and that the Red Cross was also on scene to assist the family.
