If you've ever wondered where Washburn's Ichabod Mascot comes from -- it honors the man who made the donation to keep the school's doors open nearly 150 years ago. Ichabod Washburn would have turned 213 years old Thursday, August 18th.
It's Welcome Week at Washburn University and crowds showed up to celebrate the 213th birthday of the man for whom the school is named-- Ichabod Washburn.
“It's the birthday of Washburn University. that means it's time for a party.... and my favorite party treat – cupcakes,” said University President Jerry Farley.
On the cupcakes is the logo for Washburn's 2015 sesquicentennial - also unveiled. The class that starts school on August 22nd is set to graduate 150 years after the college was founded. And the celebration continued as students moved in. In true Washburn tradition volunteer students, faculty, and alumni, along with President Farley, his wife, and even the Ichabod mascot all helped the students get settled in. For the freshman, the help was a welcomed sight.
“It means a lot because they take their time to wake up early and move a whole bunch of stuff all day. It's got to be tiring. I could see myself doing it in the future,” said freshman Tyler Wright.
