TOPEKA KAN. (WIBW)—The Silver Lake Band’s beating the heat by marching indoors. Band Director Kirsten McManus says she wanted to bring the first ever band camp to Silver Lake High to start the year off right. She also wanted new members of the band to feel comfortable. She did not want the possibly hottest day of the year to stop their progress. The kids seem to be responding well. (VIDEO INCLUDED)

"One thing I'm trying to start at Silver Lake is the culture of the band. I call the kids the bandos. Band is its own beast; we're outside in 115 degree weather in polyester,” said McManus.

On August 2nd, they’re spared the heat of the outdoors.
