Topeka, KAN. (WIBW)—A lot of parents will get back in the swing of packing lunches this week. The first day of school for kids in Auburn Washburn Schools is August 16th. All of the elementary schools had fun back to school nights for parents, teachers, and students to set up shop for the big day.
At Indian Hills Elementary, the halls were crowded with parents and students. One mother and daughter, Becky and Emily, are experiencing a lot of the same things. Tomorrow is both mother and daughter’s first day of school. It’s Emily’s first day of kindergarten and Becky’s as a teacher at Indian Hills Elementary.
“There are always mixed emotions when it comes to going back to school,” said Becky Balaun.
"We learn to write out name, numbers, letters, and we will read developmental stories,” said teacher Mrs. Moody.
Some parents know the drill, like veteran dad B.J. He’s had three kids pass through kindergarten at Indian Hills and wants to make sure the whole family's prepared for new responsibilities.
“The bus will be coming an hour earlier for the oldest because she'll be at the middle school, and our youngest will have an alarm clock for the first time,” said parent B.J. McCaskey.
And at Indian Hills’ back to school night, the students even got a sweet treat to help get them excited for their first day of school tomorrow. The PTO provided ice cream as an extra incentive to kick the school year off right. The children responded positively and seemed excited by the coming school year. After all, a year of new experiences and learning is about to begin.
