TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) _ State health officials warn that people should stay out of the Verdigris River and Rock Creek southeast of Independence because of raw sewage.
A news release said the two main sewage pump stations in the southeast Kansas town were damaged by recent flooding and have been sending raw sewage downstream. Public drinking water systems on the Verdigris should be unaffected.
Bodily contact with water in Rock Creek should be avoided, and pets and livestock be kept out of the creek and prevented from drinking from it. Anyone who comes into contact with river water should wash with
soap and water.
