An Oscar-nominated actress from Kansas is just one of the 8 honorees who were here for the 2007 Governor's Arts Awards Thursday night. Actress Shirley Knight received the Distinguished Arts Award from Governor Sebelius. You may know Shirley Knight as the grieving mother of the late Rex van de Kamp on "Desperate Housewives" last season. She most recently appeared alongside Doris Roberts and Shirley Jones in "Grandma's Boy." Shirley told us the Kansas honor isn't just another acting award. For her, it symbolized the place where she's from appreciates her work.

It was the first sell-out for the event at Washburn University. The other outstanding honorees are Ed Rolfs of the arts-supporting Central National Bank in Junction City.. Emporia ceramic artist Elaine Olafson Henry.. singer/songwriter Kelley Hunt of Lawrence.. the Kansas City Friends of choreographer Alvin Ailey.. Arts educator Alice Joy Lewis from Ottawa.. Mike Michaelis of Wichita, and Jean Ney of Kansas City.
