A Topeka-area community wants to be sure young people understand the reason for Veterans Day.

That's why students of all ages stand shoulder to shoulder with service members for the Eskridge parade and surrounding events.

The parade was organized 15 years ago by community members who felt young people didn't truly understand the sacrifices made for their freedoms. Sandy Williams, one of those organizers, says students need to understand that they need to work for what they have and that the liberties they enjoy were not handed to them on a platter.

Brendan Milroy, a sophomore member of the Wabaunsee High School marching band, says he enjoyed taking part in the parade. He says taking part in events like the parade do make students more interested in learning what the day is about and why it is worthy of a parade.

Students from Mission Valley, Wabaunsee, Shawnee Heights, Topeka West and Highland Park all took part.
