(CNN) -- Russian anti-terrorism officials said Tuesday that the country's special forces are conducting two operations in the restive Russian republic of Dagestan, state-run news agency RIA Novosti reported.

The operations come as Russian security forces address security concerns before next month's Winter Olympics in Sochi, about a 12-hour drive from Dagestan on the other side of the Caucasus mountain range.

There have been years of unrest linked to an Islamist insurgency in Dagestan and the North Caucasus region.
