FORT RILEY, Kan. – The 2nd General Support Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade, 1st Infantry Division is scheduled to receive the CH-47F Chinook Helicopter Sept. 20 at Marshall Army Airfield.
The F Model Chinook is the latest of several upgrades to the combat power that 1st CAB will provide to ground forces. This newest version of the helicopter modernizes the cockpit, upgrading the display from dials to computer monitors.
“Major improvements have been made to the avionics,” said Capt. Jake Rykken, the 2-1 GSAB plans officer and a Chinook pilot. “The bottom line is it increases the pilot’s situational awareness.”
The newest Chinook helicopter will accompany the 1st CAB on an anticipated 2013 deployment to Afghanistan.
