Group Returns From Agribusiness Development Deployment

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A group of Kansas National Guardsmen say their work in Afghanistan will live on.

About 60 soldiers with the Guard's Agribusiness Development Team were welcomed home Thursday morning with a ceremony at Forbes Field.

The group deployed in September to Laghman Province, Afghanistan. While there, they helped set up agriculture and farming businesses; trained citizens in farming practices; and set up irrigation for more land.

Lt. Col. Russell Richardson said it was a humanitarian mission that went beyond the scope of a usual military task. He said that, while their military training kept them safe, it was their farming backgrounds from their civilian lives that were of true value to the mission itself.

The group estimates it helped more than 60,000 Afghan citizens and assisted with more than 40 businesses that will be self-sustaining.

This was the Guard's fourth such team to deploy to Afghanistan.
