TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) One month after a veteran was laid to rest in a national cemetery after lying in the Shawnee County Morgue for four months, several other forgotten veterans may soon receive the same honor.
Last month, 13 news received a tip that Charles Thompson seemed to be a forgotten veteran, WIBW notified the Kansas Veterans Commission, which determined Thompson had been honorably discharged and arranged for him to be buried at Leavenworth National Cemetery, with full military honors.
While looking into Charles's situation, WIBW discovered there were four more veterans in the Shawnee County Morgue.
The Kansas Commission on Veteran's Affairs director Kafer Peele told us that Shawnee County Coroner Don Pojman confirmed the four had not been claimed by family and all had honorable discharges from military service.
Peele says Pojman will now contact the Leavenworth National Cemetery to arrange for proper veterans' burial and the military honors they earned in service to our country.
