FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) -- Fort Riley’s middle school is receiving recognition on a national scale after being named the top middle school in America.
Fort Riley Middle School celebrated the honor Friday after being named the 2012-2013 National Middle School of the year by the Association of Middle School Principals.
The school beat out all other entries based on how they promote academic achievement, improve discipline and attendance and continually improve academics.
Dr. Ron Walker, Geary County USD 475 Superintendent, called it a historic, exciting day for the school district.
“It takes a look at academics but it also looks at the number of behavioral referrals and parental support and so all of the dynamics that cause a school to be great, that’s what they look at,” he said. Walker also touted the school’s strong anti-bully program.
Dale Dennis, Kansas Deputy Commissioner of Education, added: “They had a good administrative team, a good board of education to support them. They had military parents who were extremely supportive of their kids and they had a dedicated teaching staff that really cared about the kids and they went beyond teaching.”
According to Dennis, Fort Riley Middle School is the only middle school on a military installation to receive the honor.
