WAMEGO, Kan. (WIBW) - A community came together Wednesday night to pay tribute to a fallen soldier.
Visitation was held in Wamego for 35-year-old Army Sgt. 1st Class Forrest Robertson. The Westmoreland native was killed Nov. 3 in Afghanistan when his patrol was hit by small arms fire.
On Wednesday, an army of volunteers set up a tribute in red, white and blue. They lined the more than mile-long route from the funeral home to the cemetery with American flags.
The group included neighbors, American Legion members and veterans who never knew Robertson. Among them was Kehl Murray of Onega, a veteran himself who said taking part in the effort made him reflect on those with whom he served. He said he wanted to show Robertson's family was shown the proper respect.
Robertson's funeral service is 11 am Thursday at Trinity Baptist Church in Wamego.
