DOD Changes Soldier's Status to Killed in Action

The Armed Forces Medical Examiner positively identified remains Tuesday as those of Staff Sgt. William Vile of Philadelphia. The Ft. Riley transition team member had previously been listed as "whereabouts unknown."

A day after listing him as "whereabouts unknown," the Department of Defense Tuesday said a Fort Riley soldier died in action.

27-year old Staff Sergeant William Vile of Philadelphia was wounded Friday when insurgents attacked his unit in Afghanistan. Vile was part of a Fort Riley transition team.

The Armed Forces Medical Examiner positively identified his remains Tuesday.

Two soldiers from Fort Hood, Texas also were killed in Friday's attack.

Transition team members teach and mentor their Iraqi or Afghan counterparts.
