LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) _ The replacement for a Kansas House member
who has been deployed to Iraq is her former opponent.

Former Rep. Melanie Meier, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, resigned Saturday after receiving orders to deploy.

The Leavenworth Democrat had wanted former Rep. L. Candy Ruff to
replace her until she returned in January 2010.

But Democratic precinct officials voted Monday night to replace Meier with Don Navinsky, a former Leavenworth County commissioner. Meier defeated him in the Democratic primary in August.

Ruff criticized the decision, saying Navinsky planned to challenge Meier when she returned. Navinsky said he would step aside when Meier returns, but refused to promise he wouldn't run against her.
