New Post Exchange Celebrates Grand Opening

FORT RILEY, Kan. - The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley celebrated the grand opening of the Army Air Force Exchange Service Post Exchange with a ribbon cutting ceremony February 13th at the facility's new location on Trooper Drive in Camp Forsyth.

The celebration highlighted the $24 million facility aimed at improving the quality of life for soldiers and their families on the installation, said Stan Young, AAFES general manager, Fort Riley and McConnell Air Force Base.

"By AAFES completing this store, it has taken Fort Riley one more step toward completing the Army Family Covenant," Young said. "This is AAFES' way of showing its commitment to that program and providing great support toward soldiers and families of Fort Riley."

The 132,000 square foot facility will offer clothing and electronics, a pharmacy, barber shop, optical and a spa with massage therapy. Other retail shops to choose from include Game Stop, Kansas Kollection, Urban Wear, a sports memorabilia store and a military accessories and tactical store.

In addition to a variety of retailers, the facility houses a food court featuring a Starbucks and five restaurants including Charley's Steakery, Burger King Express, Manchu Wok, Popeyes and Anthony's pizza, which opened Feb. 2. The food court at the old PX on Custer Hill will remain open with plans to renovate that facility in late 2009, Young said.

During its opening week, the new PX will play host to several vendors offering customer giveaways, special discounts and technical advice. AAFES had their own giveaways on the day of the ceremony.

In addition to the ceremony Friday, the 1st Infantry Division Band's Brass Quintet will perform and soldiers with the 1st Infantry Division Commanding General's Mounted Color Guard, 97th Military Police Battalion's K-9 Unit and 1st Brigade provided static displays in the PX parkling lot.

The new PX is part of more than $1.75 billion in major construction planned or already taking place on the installation to support the Army initiative of improving the quality of life for soldiers and their families.
