That's the assessment of retired Army Col. Pete Mansoor, who
served as an aide to Gen. David Petraeus in the Iraq. Mansoor said
Thursday that while the path in Iraq is clear, based on the efforts
of the 2007 surge of forces, the president must set the tone and
the objective for Afghanistan.
Mansoor, who is now a professor of military history at Ohio State University, said the United States must determine if the goal is a stable and functioning government in Afghanistan or pushing the fight against Al Qaida now entrenched in the mountainous regions of Pakistan.
He shared those views with officers at Fort Leavenworth's Command and General Staff College.
