FORT RILEY, Kan. - The “Black Lions” of 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, will unveil a newly erected memorial during a dedication ceremony at the battalion headquarters, Bldg. 8037 on Custer Hill at 2 p.m., July 17.
Lt. Col Eric Timmerman, 1st Bn., 28 Inf. commander, will speak at the ceremony which honors the 19 Black Lions killed during the unit’s deployment to Baghdad in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The “Black Lions” deployed to Baghdad with the 4th IBCT in February 2007 as part of the troop “surge.” The unit took control of northwestern Rashid District where both Al Qaeda and Shia extremists operated. The Black Lions helped decrease the level of violence across the area through combat operations, reconciliation meetings and infrastructure revitalization projects.
