JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) - With storms rolling in over night and clouds covering the sky throughout Thursday morning, golf did not appear to be in the forecast. But the sun was out all afternoon at the Junction City Invitational and that provided for a great round of golf at Rolling Meadows.
17 schools were on hand Thursday afternoon for the tournament. Washburn Rural, who was the favorite going in, finished in first with a score of 292 followed by Hayden and Seaman, which both shot 305 as a team.
"This team is a real competitive team," said Washburn Rural JV Coach Jorgen Brockman. "Of course we try and gear our practice to be very competitive and they go right with it. They love it, and you know, every day is a new day for them, it’s a new 18 holes and today is no different."
Washburn Rural has been led all season by junior Andrew Beckler, who has been a part of the varsity team since his freshman year and has recently earned the honor of being Athlete of the Week.
"Andrew is just a steady golfe," Brockman said. "Nothing seems to faze him. Of course he was state champion in 6A last year and he knows how to get up and down every hole and just nothing seems to faze Andrew."
Beckler finished finished the day in first place after shooting a 69; 3 under par for the course.
