MAYETTA, Kan. (WIBW)-Greg Atwater and his family went to Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation to participate in a 3-mile-walk.
However, this walk is meaningful to the Atwater family. The matching pictures they have on their shirts is of a special baby boy named Gage Atwater.
"It's actually my son who is in St. Jude's Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee with a brain tumor and he's been there since February, so it's kind of a special thing for me," said Gage Atwater's father, Greg Atwater.
This is the first 94.5 Country St. Jude "Walk for Hope" at Prairie People's Park. The Atwater family joined with participants who were eager to walk for a good cause.
"Actually, I'm really excited and it's easier to walk with people instead of by myself. I like doing it as a group, so its really good," said Morningstar Pelcher.
After completing the walk, participants celebrated by line dancing and watching a performance by Country Stampede artist, Morgan Frazier.
Participants could also donate money towards pediatric disease research to benefit St. Jude's Research Hospital. Events like this keep the Atwater family in a positive mood.
"For me, it's a life changer what happened with my son. I can't afford something like that and events like this truly help families out at St. Jude's," said Atwater.
Organizers at the "Walk for Hope" say they raised nearly
$4,000. Atwater says this is a glimmer of hope that his son can live a regular life someday instead of being a lifetime hospital patient.
"Hopefully, we can take this disease of cancer and strike it out!," said Atwater.
