MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A group of select students is honing their leadership skills and at the same time, leaving a lasting mark on their community.

Ninth graders from Junction City, Manhattan and Riley County worked together Monday to create water crossings along the Linear Park Trail Sunset Spur behind the Sunset Zoo in the Little Apple.

It’s all part of the Flint Hills Regional Leadership Program- a servant-based leadership seminar for area youth: The Leadership, Education, Achievement and Development Workshop. This year's program spanned two days- a day of classroom leadership and team building exercises followed by a day of community service.

"Our teachers have seen who has potential to be leaders but need more skills to be developed. The program here give you a variety of ways to help show you team work and how to lead in a group and how to perform tasks that you need to get done," said Deandre Ramsey, a Junction City High Student student.

Finishing the service project was no easy task. Just getting the materials down the trail was hard work but the students say they learned a lot- skills they can take back to their respective high schools and continue to develop.

"It helps with communicating and teamwork and we’re just learning how to understand what each other’s skills are. I’m going to be able to incorporate other people’s ideas and how to make them work to make a bigger plan more successful and also to be able to vocalize my own opinions," said Gabby Bond, a Riley County High School student.

"I think we’re going to attract a lot of people down here, especially since it’s by the Sunset Zoo... You just keep collaborating with different groups, figuring out who is doing what and being able to help each other as well... I think that I would be able to get a lot more done in the future," added Sarah Stewart, a Manhattan High School student.
