Woman Who Rescues Young Boy Named Champion Of Character

Topeka, Kan. (WIBW) - A woman who saved a young child's life is October's Champion of Character

Chrissy Dykstra successfully performed CPR on a non-responsive 2-year-old who had fallen into Lake Shawnee. She and her husband were biking when they stopped near the water. They saw the child, who was playing close to the water, fall in. Dykstra and and grabbed the child and began CPR. The child came to and she remained until the first responders came.

Dykstra is a certified dental assistant to Dr. Scott Kennedy and had recently renewed her CPR training at the office.

She was nominated by the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office and Fred Martinez.

Anyone may make a nomination for Champions of Character. Nomination forms can be downloaded at the Topeka City of Character website or can be found at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library, Topeka Capital Journal Office or by calling the Topeka City of Character Office at 273-4330.
