Winds Spin Signs, Damage Church Under Construction

Viewer Video - Hooters Sign Spins in Storm

Storm Destroys Church New Construction In Silver Lake

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Severe storms blew through northeast Kansas Wednesday night, bringing high winds, heavy rain and even some hail.

Gusts on Topeka's west side topped 60 miles per hour. A 13 News viewer captured video as the winds spun the tall lighted sign outside Hooters on SW Wanamaker, eventually causing it to go dark.

The winds knocked down tree limbs and power lines. Westar Energy reported nearly 6200 customers in Shawnee County without power at one point. The number was less than 4200 by 10 pm.

The wind gusts brought down a new Baptist church under construction on Hoch Road just outside Silver Lake. Much of the metal building was blown across the wind and debris was scattered around neighboring fields.

Some minor street flooding also was reported during the heavy rains.
