MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- A handgun was discovered at a cemetery adjacent to the campus of Manhattan High School.
Manhattan High School Principal Terry McCarty sent out information about the incident to students' parents.
On the evening of Tuesday, April 30, the Riley County Police Department was alerted to a handgun that was found by a USD 383 custodian on the Sunset Cemetery side of the wall on the north side of the Manhattan High School West Campus property.
"RCPD is currently conducting a thorough investigation of the weapon. We are assisting RCPD in any way that we can. At this time, no other information is available to us," McCarty said.
He went on to tell parents that no threats have been made at the school and that the gun was not found on school property.
"There is no increased danger to the public or to the school stemming from this found weapon. We are committed to making Manhattan High School a safe place for our students and staff. We thought it was important for you to know and we encourage you to talk with your student(s) about school safety issues," McCarty added.
