TOPEKA, Kan. -- Beginning Monday (9/17), SW 29th Street between SW Topeka Boulevard and S Kansas Avenue will be completely closed for two weeks to allow contractors to catch up on installing a waterline and complete full-depth patching on the roadway.
Service lines to businesses will also be installed. Accesses to businesses will be provided.
City of Topeka Communications Manager David Bevens said it was the intention from the beginning to have through traffic during most, if not all, of the project. However, the contractor building the waterline ran into a large amount of rock that has put both the waterline and roadwork projects behind schedule. The contractors report they need full closure now in order to have the projects done by the end of the 2012 construction season.
The detour from the 29th and Kansas intersection will be 29th Street east to SE Adams, then north to 21st Street, west to Topeka Boulevard and south to 29th Street.
SW 37th Street between S Kansas and SE Adams is also closed at this time. The detour from the 37th and Kansas intersection will be west to Topeka, , north to 21st, east to Adams and south to 37th.
Area message boards for motorists announcing the pending closure will be posted on Friday.
