Water Emergency Continues For Council Grove

(WIBW) - Their tower is slowly refilling, but people in Council Grove remained under a water emergency Friday night.

City administrator Danny Matthews says zebra mussels have clogged the water intake from City Lake. He says crews hooked up floater pumps Friday from the fire department to bypass the intake. He says the move has restored about 80 percent of the normal flow level into the clarifier. It's at 550 gallons per hour, compared to the normal 775 gallons per hour.

However, Matthews says it will take until at least midnight to completely refill the tower. Matthews says asks residents to continue limiting water use to essential needs only -no lawn or flower watering, car washing or other activities. He says the water coming from the tower is safe, it was just running low.

Dive teams will be in Saturday to assess the extent of the intake clog. Matthews says once they have isolated the problem, they will be able to devise a permanent solution for clearing the mussels without them entering further into the system.
