TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Another water main ruptured in Topeka Friday afternoon.
It created an unusual scene near the Cracker Barrel restaurant on Ashworth Place, east of Huntoon and Wanamaker. Water was shooting about 40 feet into the air when crews arrived.
A nearby building owner said this is at least the sixth water main break he has seen on that stretch of road in 14 years. It took crews about half an hour to get the water blasts under control.
This has been an especially bad year for water main breaks around the Capital City. July set a monthly record with 162 breaks recorded. From Friday Aug. 10 to Monday Aug. 20, the city saw 43 water main breaks. City street officials blame the hot, dry weather.
