Washburn Universtiy Celebrated 149 Years Strong

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A local university celebrated a major milestone.

Washburn University turned 149 young today!

President Jerry Farley and the Ichabod mascot served cupcakes to students and faculty at the memorial union on the campus.

Washburn was established February 6th as Lincoln College by a charter issued by the state of Kansas.

The school was granted a permanent location in 1865 when Topeka Colonel John Ritchie donated 160 acres.

Washburn has more than 6,000 students and 1,000 faculty and staff.
