Washburn University Tests Emergency Alert System

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Washburn University tested its systems to keep students and staff safe.

Washburn University Police put its "I-Alert" into action Thursday, conducting an official test of the university's emergency notification system. In the event of an emergency on campus, I-Alert issues text messages, automated phone calls, e-mail messages and posts to the school's web site and Facebook page.

Officials say it's important to prepare students in case there ever is a real situation. The tests are conducted once a semester.

Students and staff can sign up for alerts at www.washburn.edu/ialert.

Officials say Thursday's test went smoothly. They even got a few calls making sure it wasn't real.
