TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A local mascot threw a birthday party Monday.
Ichabod Washburn turned 214 years old. His actual birthday was August 11th, but the party was Monday as students returned to campus.
Washburn President Jerry Farley and Mr. Ichabod himself, sporting a special top hat decked out in birthday candles, served cupcakes. Memorial Union also offered specials to celebrate.
In October 1868, the real-life Ichabod Washburn gave a $25,000 donation to what was then Lincoln College, in effect saving it from financial ruin. The board of trustees switched the name from Lincoln to Washburn College to thank him.
