TOPEKA -- Shawnee County Election Commissioner Elizabeth Ensley Deiter tells us her office is mailing a notice to every registered voter in the county. The purpose of the mailing is to inform them of their voting place and the various districts in which they reside. Additionally, the mailing will serve to verify addresses of registered voters in Shawnee County. Today is also the last day to register to vote or to change party affiliation.

Election Commissioner Ensley Deiter emphasized the importance of the notice this year due to redistricting and the consolidation of some polling places. She urges residents to pay particular attention to their specific information as their districts and voting places may have changed from previous years.

For example, Shawnee County now includes part of the 47th Kansas House District which it hadn’t prior to the U.S. District Court Redistricting Order. Likewise, the number of polling locations decreased from 156 buildings last year to 100 for the upcoming primary election in an effort to save Shawnee County taxpayer money.

Any resident who receives a certificate for an individual who no longer lives at that address, should write “Return to Sender – Not at this Address” on the card and return it to the mail carrier or post office. This is one of the few ways that begins the process for removing names from the voter registration list.

Those who do not receive certificates of registration within the next several days should call the county election office at 266-0285.
