TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW)__ The Topeka Cemetery got some spring cleaning Saturday morning.

Volunteers got their hands dirty at the 12th annual "Adopt-A-Piece-of History" day. The event is sponsored by Keep America Beautiful and Topeka/Shawnee County.

Volunteers cleaned, mowed and trimmed just in time for Memorial Day.

More than half of the burial plots did not have funds paid for regular maintenance and cleaning.

Volunteers said they liked giving back to their community and were rewarded with a lunch provided by Frito Lay, Coca-Cola Inc. and Nestle.
