TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A group of people driven to ensure those who are homebound get a good meal - and a smile - got a big thank you.

Meals on Wheels of Shawnee and Jefferson County held a volunteer recognition luncheon Thursday at Gage Park. More than 200 volunteers attended. They are just part of the force that delivers more than 1000 meals around the area every day.

Hills Pet Nutrition received the Corporate Citizens Award during the event, while Jo and Walter McDaniel earned the "Karl and Irene Reuter Award" for their more than 20 years of dedicated service.

The couple said they begin delivering as a way to stay active. Walter says they stick with it because of all the great people they meet who are truly appreciative of their efforts. Jo added that she doesn't know if they're making a difference in the clients' lives, but the clients have made a difference in their's.

13's Melissa Brunner was the featured speaker for the event.
