Vacant Building Collapses In Downtown Kingman

KINGMAN, Kan. (KAKE)-- A building in downtown Kingman has partially collapsed.

The building, located at the intersection of Main and Sherman, collapsed around 2:40 p.m. Thursday.

Police say no one was in the building when the collapse happened, and no one was hurt.

Emergency crews are working with other building owners in the area. No surroundings buildings were damaged.

The block has been closed due to safety concerns. Kingman City Manager Emily Graf said, "we got it barricaded right away. Our top concern was the safety of our citizens and it will stay up until we have time to access the situation and to make sure that no one will be in danger."

Residents in Kingman say after this incident they hope it encourages the city to inspect other old downtown buildings. Michelle Darnell said, "if the stability of these other buildings aren't checked out to make sure that something like this isn't going to happen to one of the other buildings."

The cause is under investigation.
