TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- USD 437 officials said Friday that unfired 22 caliber bullets were found on a Jay Shideler Elementary School bus, and inside the school building.
District officials tell 13 News that the bullets were brought to school by a very young student. According to the district, the student meant no harm, but the situation was being taken very seriously.
The district said in a statement:
"We take student safety very seriously at Auburn-Washburn. We work very diligently to keep your children safe. If you have any concerns or questions, please feel free to contact Jay Shideler principal Jeff Freeman.
Law enforcement officials were contacted by the district to make sure any necessary precautions were being taken.
The situation came Friday as 18 students were reported dead following a shooting at an elementary school in Newton, Connecticut.
Jay Shideler Elementary is located at 4948 Southwest Wanamaker Road in Topeka.
