TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)-- A new report released saw Kansas unemployment rate edging higher in May.
But saw modest growth in the states private sector over the past year.
The Kansas jobless rate stood at 5.7% last month,that's up from 5.6% in April, but down 6.1% from last May.
Private companies employed about 14,400 more workers last month than this time last year, that's an increase of 1.3%.
The biggest jump over the year was 5.4% in professional and business services. Manufacturing firms also added 3,000 jobs over the year.
Employment grew by 8,300, reaching nearly 161,000 last month. The Labor Department says workers have seen their hours increase consistently for several months.
