Two More Fort Riley Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan

Two Fort Riley soldiers were killed in Afghanistan last week when enemy forces attacked their unit with explosives and gunfire.

FORT RILEY, Kan. – Two 1st Infantry Division soldiers died November 16th in Paktika Province, Afghanistan.

Sgt. Channing Hicks, 24, and Specialist. Joseph Richardson, 23, were killed when enemy forces attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device and small arms fire.

Both soldiers were infantrymen assigned to 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

Hicks was originally from Greer, South Carolina and joined the Army in June 2006. He previously served two deployments to Iraq with the 1st Infantry Division.

Richardson was originally from Booneville, Arkansas and arrived to the unit in October 2008. He had previously served one tour to Iraq with the Big Red One.

This was the first deployment to Afghanistan for both soldiers.

Their deaths come on the heels of two other recent casualties.

Staff Sgt. Matthew Stiltz, 26, of Spokane, Washington, was killed by enemy forces Nov. 12 in Zerok, Afghanistan.

Stiltz died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with indirect fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan., as an infantryman.

Stiltz arrived at Fort Riley in February 2006. This was his third deployment. He served two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Stiltz was posthumously promoted to the rank of staff sergeant.

The week before, Capt. James D. Nehl, 37, of Gardiner, Oregon, was killed by enemy forces Nov. 9 in eastern Afghanistan.

Nehl died in Ghazni Province, Afghanistan, when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was an infantry officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

Nehl joined the Army in 2007 and arrived at Fort Riley in May. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He also previously deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
