TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Authorities identified the driver in a one-vehicle accident had an I-470 exit ramp closed for several hours Wednesday night.

He is 42-year-old Grady Likes of Marysville, Indiana.

Police were called around 7:30 pm Wednesday to Huntoon and Wanamaker on an accident report.

Police tell 13 News a white pickup pulling a trailer was traveling on I-470 when a wheel fell off near 21st St. Police say Likes then tried to exit onto Wanamaker, but veered off the ramp, went through a concrete water drainage ditch and up an embankment before hitting trees.

A child's car seat was found outside of the vehicle, forcing police and witnesses to search the surrounding area for a possible missing child. Scanner traffic indicated the driver was not coherent and could not tell authorities whether a child had in fact been in the vehicle.

Officers later confirmed with Likes' family out of state that he was traveling alone and there was no child in the car during the time of the incident.

He was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Authorities continue investigating the accident.

The Kansas Dept. of Transportation said the ramp from westbound 470 to Wanamaker opened at 9 pm. Lane restrictions on Wanamaker continued for several hours after that.
