Troops Return Home

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A second round of soldiers returned home to a ceremony at Forbes Field Monday.

The Kansas National Guard's 1st battalion, 161st field artillery and 35th military police company spent the last year deployed to the horn of Africa. The soldiers conducted operations in Africa to strengthen regional stability, prevent conflict and protect the U.S. and coalition interests.

Monday's homecoming was extra special for the Baker family of Emporia family. They have dealt with back-to-back deployments for Spec. Tony Baker. He says he thought often of his family, but then would go on and do his job. He says it was nice to see all the support for their return.

Val Baker said she was proud of her husband's service, knowing he was keeping people safe and helping other countries.

The battalion is headquartered in Wichita with units in cities around Kansas. About 175 soldiers returned home Monday. The first 200 returned Feb. 9, and the final group from this deployment is expected as soon as the end of the week.
