Trial Begins For 2nd Defendant In Gibson Murder

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Jury selection got underway Monday for one of the nine people accused in a Topeka murder.

Daquan Wilkins is charged in a string of crimes from summer 2011, including a holdup attempt that ended with the shooting death of Natalie Gibson.

Prosecutors dismissed five charges against Wilkins last week. He still faces counts of first-degree murder, aggravated robbery, attempted aggravated robbery, aggravated battery and attempted burglary of a vehicle in another case.

He is the second defendant to stand trial. In the first, jurors failed to reach a verdict on the murder charges against Anceo Stovall.

A motions hearing is set for Tuesday on a motion from Stovall's attorney, Jonathan Phelps, for a new trial. Phelps alleges juror misconduct, saying, during the trial, an unidentified juror posted a comment about the trial on CJ online.

Stovall was convicted on one count, acquitted on another, and jurors couldn't agree on the other nine.

A retrial is set for October 15th.
